Speaking Of Failed Businesses And Candidates For Public Office

Apparently, some supporters of Rep. Julia Carson (D) would like people to believe her Republican opponent Eric Dickerson is a failed businessman as suggested by comments from her supporters on area blog sites, including this one. They suggest that by selling his Buick dealership this past summer this somehow confirms that he must be a failed businessman. One blogger, in support of Carson, referred to “Dickerson’s failed Buick dealership” in the same breath he accused others, including your’s truly, of slinging mud on behalf of Dickerson. Let’s examine the facts a little closer and compare Dickerson’s business success to that of Carson’s.

Dickerson rose up through the ranks of General Motors and Rolls Royce beginning 27 years ago and became a successful business executive. In 1999, he became a business entrepreneur by opening a Buick dealership he successfully operated for 7 years before selling out to Ed Martin. While Carson’s supporters wish to portray the sale as evidence of him being a failed businessman, it had much more to do with the changing automobile industry. It is no secret that GM is engaged in a major downsizing and consolidation effort. The Buick division has been reduced to just three model lines. These changed circumstances made it unwise for anyone in Dickerson’s shoes to continue operating a single, dwindling automobile line. His decision to sell it was a practical business decision as much as anything else. In addition to his Buick dealership, Dickerson also purchased a Maggie Moo franchise last year.

For those who insist on making his business success or failure an issue in this campaign, I think it is only fair to compare his business record to that of Ms. Carson’s. While she has spent most of her adult life as a career politician, she did venture into the private sector by opening an upscale fashion boutique, J Carson, in Claypool Court in downtown Indianapolis in 1985. As the Indianapolis News described the clothing store in a October 1, 1985 new story: “Offering women the latest fashions at reasonable prices is just another way the legislator believes she can serve her constituents. “No conflict of interest,” then-State Sen. Julia Carson told the News. Or was there?

A little more than a year later the Indianapolis Star’s George Stuteville reported on November 19, 1986, that a few Center Township workers were facing reprimands over a clothing dispute with Carson. It seems that Center Township had established a voucher program which allowed poor Center Township residents to redeem vouchers at approved vendors to purchase clothing for themselves and their children. The approved vendors included Stacy’s Discount Clothes, Zayre, Today’s Fashion and J. Carson. One of those vendors alone was granted a special benefit. Carson chose to participate in a program which permitted the vendors to rent space in the township’s warehouse to display their clothing. Carson, however, was permitted to display her clothing in the Center Township officers where the vouchers were being issued because she complained there was no heat in the warehouse. Carson then complained after picking up only 5 of the 37 vouchers initially issued that the township employees were discouraging the recipients from her. Stuteville reported:

[Center Township Trustee Charles] Walton said it looked as if her store was being boycotted by trustee workers who thought the veteran state legislator must have had an unfair advantage by placing her merchandise in the township trustee’s office building.

“Julia has political enemies. There is a lot of infighting going on: partisans of the other vendors don’t want J. Carson’s to get the vouchers. It looks like they took it upon themselves to make that decision,” said Walton.
The flip side of the argument was that the trustee workers were actually doing the taxpayers and the voucher recipients a favor because the prices on the clothing offered by the other vendors were less expensive. Carson’s take was obviously different. She told Stuteville, “I could see my enemies screaming if I were giving indigents poor quality clothing, but I am competitive with my costs. I don’t do no markup on them. Why not let a poor kid have a damn good coat?”

Favoritism or not, it was not enough to save J. Carson’s from failure. The Indianapolis Star reported on October 15, 1987 that her landlord, Claypool Development Co., sued her for more than $74,199 in back rent and unpaid assessments for her clothing store. It appeared she hadn’t paid rent for some time as the story reported her monthly rent was $2,923. Carson shared a different view of the situation with the Star: “We reached an agreement two weeks ago and I guess it’s a matter of not communicating the agreement,” Carson said. “This is just an error that they filed the lawsuit.” On February 24, 1990, the Indianapolis News reported that “State Sen. Julia M. Carson’s wages are being garnished to help pay off a debt from a failed business venture.” The News said Carson was the only member of the legislature to have her wages garnished.

At the same time, the News reported that Carson was delinquent in the payment of more than $10,000 in property taxes on two properties she owned. Carson told the News, “I don’t apologize for not making a business work.” In a separate news story, Carson told the News she disputed the taxes owed on one of the properties. “The apartment building itself has been dormant for over 10 years,” Carson said. “It’s only the house that should be taxed and not the apartment building.” “But it’s not.” “It’s a single-family dwelling,” she added. That’s an argument that hardly works with an honest assessor.

Later, when Carson would become Center Township Trustee, she revamped the voucher program so that only one store, Doris’ Outlet, qualified to provide clothing to the poor. The store was owned by Doris and Louis Morse, who refused to answer questions of Indianapolis Star about the arrangement. A Star analysis in 1993 of the store’s prices determined that they were much higher than those at discount stores. Carson called it an oversight at the time according to the Star. “It will never happen again as long as I am trustee,” she told the Star. But when supporters of her Republican opponent for Congress in 1996 purchased clothing from Doris’ Outlet, they discovered that some clothing items cost several times the cost of the items at discount stores like Value City. Carson defended Doris’ Outlet because it was closer than the other stores. She told the Star she had to purchase transportation for clients if she sent them to stores like Value City with their vouchers. To her Republican opponent, Virginia Blankenbaker, Carson was ripping off the taxpayers. “She is gouging the taxpayers,” Blankenbaker told the Star on October 10, 1996. “Julia had some questionable things going on. She said they would be corrected, and in fact they weren’t,” she added. Blankenbaker also criticized Carson for giving township jobs to her own daughter and two grandsons. Carson defended the hiring of family members. “I have no qualms,” she told the Star.

Now, supporters of Carson will invariably scream that it’s mudslinging to raise legitimate news stories that have been written about Carson’s past. These are matters which are a part of the public record. Instead of accusing AI and others of making up stories about Carson, her defenders would do well to take a trip over the state library or the Marion County library and search the news archives as this blogger did instead of sitting on their butts and attacking anyone who dares to report on her record. It’s all right there in black and white. If you want to accuse someone of mudslinging, then start with the newspapers who reported these items as newsworthy in the first instance. And when you do that you might find a few more items of interest, including the following:

· While then-state senator Carson thought it was just fine for the township to fork over more money to let the poor buy her clothes, she was less charitable towards the needs of the poor when she became Center Township Trustee. Incredibly, one of Carson’s first policy decisions in office was to tell AFDC recipients that they would be ineligible for poor relief. Can you imagine if a Republican had done the same thing? Her handling of poor relief triggered a lawsuit on behalf of recipients by the Indiana Civil Liberties Union, which forced her to rescind the policy, as well as a process that denied benefits without due process. As to an argument made by Ken Falk of the ICLU that she was trying to discourage people from applying for poor relief, Carson said, “That is not true. He’s having a pipe dream. We’re throwing money around here like south going north.” Indianapolis Star, February 28, 1991.
· Carson was right on target when she said the township was “throwing money around here like south going north.” Carson got her own salary increased 63.5% during the 6 years she served as Center Township Trustee. Carson made the decision to purchase the former Standard Life Insurance building, now known as the Julia Carson Government Center. When she acquired it with taxpayer funds for $350,000, she said taxpayers would have to spend another $2-$3 million to renovate the building. As it turned it, it cost $5 million to renovate the building. While she promised to make it one-stop shopping for all Center Township needs, only a small part of the township’s offices were ever re-located to the building. Not long after she said that, Carson announced the township would not need all the space and “some would be leased and some may be used for “entrepreneurial opportunities.” We’re looking at forming small businesses for people,” she said. When she was elected to Congress, she insisted on having her own congressional office in the building with a view of the downtown skyline. “This is the office where you watch fireworks,” she said, admiring her view of Downtown. Indianapolis News, April 15, 1994; Indianapolis Star, June 19, 1996; Indianapolis Star, October 10, 1996.
· Carson demonstrated how she exacts revenge on people who don’t obey her command when she served as township trustee. She fired three township employees who refused to support her candidate for township constable, Mark “Tony” Duncan, who was running to succeed a previous constable, Taylor Seaths, who pleaded guilty to federal mail fraud charges. The township eventually settled a lawsuit for $60,000 and tens of thousands in wasted attorneys fees at the urging of Carson’s attorney, Virginia Dill McCarty, in 1996 as she launched her bid for a congressional seat. The Star reported, “Despite a state unemployment ruling to the contrary, McCarty and Carson maintain the men weren’t fired.” “They just didn’t show up for work,” Carson said. The ICLU saw it differently. “These guys didn’t get rehired because of politics,” Rich Waples said. “They have a right not to be denied these jobs.” He described it as “a straight First Amendment claim.” Indianapolis Star, March 28, 1996.
· In 1994, the Indianapolis Star reported that the Marion County Election Board had determined that a political action committee operated by Carson and her successor, Carl Drummer, known as Democrats United for Victory, had used the PAC’s funds improperly by making gifts and loans from the PAC to township employees. Carson told the Board the PAC had stopped making illegal loans and gifts to employees. “It’s unfortunate,” she said of the violations. “It’s nothing that was deliberate.” The Board voted 2-1 to let Carson and Drummer off with a warning after their pleas for leniency rather than refer the two to the Marion County prosecutor's office for prosecution. Indianapolis Star, December 14, 1994.

Great job Gary. I would watch my back if I was you. Carson won't like you rehashing her past.
Where's Wilson? I'm sure he will have something to say. Great Job.

Does Eric Dickerson actually own Maggie Moos or not? He tells the newspaper (and on his last campaign finance report) he calls himself the owner of Maggie Moos. He boasts of Maggie Moos on his website. Of course, It's owned by the "School's Out" Corporation - the origin of that name is a matter for salacious speculation later...

What's odd is his required official Financial Disclosure Statement to Congress: he omits any mention of "Maggie Moos" there. Did he simply forget it? So he hid assets from Congress?

On that same Disclosure Report he makes no mention of that famous $2,000,000 personal liability the bank sued him for. Why did he hide that from Congress and the public? Two million dollars is kinda big to forget about, eh?

These are events of this year - not dredged up years past. He simply didnt tell the truth on his official required Financial Disclosure Report about assets and liabilities. What else isn't he telling you and Congress? What else is he he hiding?

I do have to congratulate AI for a summary story of old news stories that were widely known and discussed when published years ago - actually, many elections ago. The voters knew of these allegations and, even so, repeatedly and massively voted for Julia Carson for Indiana Senate, for Trustee, for Congresslady.

Perhaps for newcomers to Indianapolis from other states, the stories might be interesting - to longtime Center Township residents it's just old election-time fodder trotted out regularly and futily by the GOP trying to put lipstick on their usual pigs of candidates.
This year is no different except TCP/IP is the new medium of attack...

If Julia were as effective at using her public offices to help her constituents as she is herself, she might actually have something to show for it. It looks to me like Julia always win and her constituents always lose. The voters have nobody to blame but themselves for letting her get by with it.

Folk from Illinois should remember the failure Abraham Lincoln took on that general store. Of course, the retort will be "What about Harry S Truman's failed haberdashery?" Both turned out OK nevertheless.

One of the biggest corporations in Indianapolis is the mighty Eli Lilly. Third time was a charm for old Colonel Lilly - he had both a failed plantation in Mississippi and a failed pharmacy in Lafayette before doing it right in Indianapolis.

Of course, Ms. Carson never took bankruptcy despite the urging of many at the time years and years ago ...

Frankly.. this horse is dead. Too bad we can't just move on.

I'd be careful Wilson. Carson has already been forced to file one amendment to her financial disclosure form this year for failing to disclose what she was legally required to do. You would think she would have it down after 10 years of filing. I might add that it's a pretty sparse report, even as amended.

indyernie said...

This horse is far from dead. The word is getting out and Wilson comparing Carson to Lincoln and Lilly is a big stretch. Lincoln never filtered taxpayer money to himself and he was a true leader, not a patsy to the Democrat Party.
Wilson ask Dickerson about Maggie Moo's, you've been seen hanging around and talking to Dickerson and his volunteers. If Carson knew how often she'd be upset.

Wilson-mice, please post the pictures of the events she was at. Next to where Hoffa is buried, where's Julia has to be one of the best kept secrets in Indianapolis!

I'm sure she was at church asking for forgiveness for not coming forward to tell us how to find the little girl. By now, she has probably died and it is on Julia's hands. We might as add that to the city's ongoing body count. How sad, how sad.

Wasn't it the Dems, who were bashing Bush for being too religous? "Uh, he just wears his religion on his sleeves". Aren't the Dems the ones who believe so heavily in the separation of church and state? Is it not some Unpatriot people of the Democratic party who wish to ban "God" in the pledge of allegiance?

Um, the last time I checked, the dreaded religious right, were the ones, according to the Dems, who just hates those gays and won't change the constitution so they can get married.

Why then, Mr. Wilson, are you so obsessed with Dickerson's church attendence record? I might expect a Republican to be obsessed with something like that, but the right hand man of a congressional seat holder that's a democrat?

I'm just saying, it sounds so hypocritical.

I mean, wouldn't even the democratic voters, who want a change in the 7th district want someone like Dickerson in that seat?

If you dont know anything about Dickerson because you only listen to people like Wilson then please vist Eric's website and find out for yourself.

It is www.ERICDICKERSONFORCONGRESS.com.

An informed decision can be respected by anyone. An uninformed decision however, can be extremely costly.

As far as her business dealings and such, I think the prosecutor should have gotten involved and wiht all the shenanigans with 300 East the Attorney General should start an investigation. Sounds like RICO laws would apply.

Truthfulness of federal campaign documents and financial disclosure statements however are done under penalties of the law. That's where Dickerson can't keep his stories straight !

fwiw, in 1998 Hoffmeister took a $120,000 2nd mortgage out on the jewelry store to pay for killer TV ads in the primary.

It's mighty curious that such a "successful businessman" like Dickerson has put so little money of his own into this race. He's grossly underfunded at only 1/3 of his declared goal of $200,000.

Maybe Eric is wise - Hoffmeister never did recoup that $120,000 so after a failed campaign, he had to "eat" that chunk of change personally.

OK Wilson once more, pay attention this time. The KKK was organized by Nathan Bedford Forrest an officer in the Confederate Army and the Southern Democrats. This happened at the end of the Civil War. The Democrat Party with the support of President Andrew Johnson (a pro-southern Democrat) kept the KKK active throughout the reconsolidation of the USA. This kept African Americans on the plantations post Civil War.
The KKK terrorized African Americans to keep them from registering for the vote. Generations of African Americans resisted registering for the vote because of the KKK and the Democrat Party and the “Black Codes“ put into place by Johnson. The Republicans in the Senate at that time, where the first to overwrite a President.

I didn't say I lived there DA, I said I knew it was intergraded.
PS
I don't live in Beech Grove either, but go ahead and make a smart ass statement. I’ll be sure to show it to my neighbors before election day and let them know that it comes from Julia Carson’s staff.

Black voters are quite knowledgeable and informed - that's why less than 10% vote for GOP candidates despite such "history lessons" from folk like IndyErnie -

When Bush spoke last year at Black Expo Luncheon he got perfunctory applause while our Congresswoman Julia Carson got a loud overwhelming standing ovation. African-Americans know who are friends and who are opponents...

Up all night, were we, AI?

Wilson, is the precinct where you're so proud of being a committeeman, the same precinct at which you ripped down an opponent's politicla signs this May? In full view of three witnesses? Misdemanor, that.

That being said, I am aware that Miss Carson attended at least one funeral Sat. It was the grandmother of a poor soul Wilson bashed on the blogs one or two days earlier.

One more time, s=l=o=w=l=y so Wilson can get it:

People remain anoymous because the political vindictiveness is outrageous over at Carson-Drummer & Co. I am personally aware of some very , very long knives brandished at opportune times. Those who were offended learned their lesson, Wilson, and will never reveal their names here or elsewhere.

They still have something of a life left. No thanks to your thugs.

And...Little Girl Alert: she's told me via e-mail she'll reveal her whrerabouts after Nov.7 She's safe, and well-fed, warm.

Cancel the Amber Alert.

And I'd be real careful about throwing around insults, Wilson...all the witnesses to your misdemeanor in May are still around...and after this election, they may be willing to step forward. The thing is, and this is real odd--you didn't have to do it. Your lady was cruising to victory. Classic please-the-Queen overkill.

Thank you for your historical research.

Please allow me to rebut some of Wilson's False comments referring to me.

Response to Wilson "ghost employee of the year" Allen

You can dish it out, but you can't take it when the subject is You!

Wrong:
8:19 PM - I have not been handing out Xerox copies of stories on Julia Carson. Maybe I should.

Wilson is the smear merchant.

9:31 PM - Prove me wrong: Carson allowed you to be paid by the township while you were out digging up dirt on her opponents and the opponents of other candidates when was supporting.
Say it isn't so.

9:42 PM - No one has sued you for spreading exaggerated false information about them and for invasion of their privacy.

10:00 PM - I have been taken very seriously, we have a new Voter ID Law; one vote per living person, per precinct.

10:20 PM - You are right it is over 10-12 years ago, so why was a report 15 years old, used and taken out of context this year against Carson's current opponent.

Your chosen lifestyle is of no interest to me. You are a non-entity in the scheme of things.
Get a new life after November 7th!

Fabricating facts about your work record as Clerk, I don't think so.
Check with some of your former co-workers who were there.

10:40 PM - You were not retired from 1991-2003 - You were allowed to dig up dirt during this period, and you were paid by the township.

11:04 PM - "She's an electoral jinx." False, merely your opinion.
You would be surprised at the number of black candidates I have helped to elect.
Would you like to have references?

11:41 PM - "Poor ignorant Jocelyn"
Information on my resume supports my knowledge and expertise. You will not find any false information on my 10 page resume.
Do you have a copy?

No Wilson, not all of the world is against me; you were paid to slander me.

Wait until you read my blogsite.
The truth will be published. The comments will not be deleted.

11:46 PM - Yes, black voters do know who their friends are, and it is not the Democrat Party. No more "plantation politics please for African Americans."

12:11 PM - UAW folks, I have never worked in a plant. But I have had endorsement in past from the Firefighters Union and the AFLCIO Central Labor Council.

Exactly what are your credentials?
Now, who is spreading idle gossip?

I'd had a few days of nice reading, with Jocelyn disappearing for awhile, and Wilson not all riled up.

Damn.

Fifteen days, AI. The nightmare will be over.

And win or lose, Miss Carson's reign of influence will be severely diminished.

Oh yeah, Wilson:

I own Maggie Moo's.

WHO THE HELL CARES WHO DISHES UP THE ICE CREAM? You've got bigger troubles, Wilson...your Queen is hallucinating on TV.

Reign her in before she does a Woody Hayes on someone.

The supporters of The Ghetto Mafia are all in denial. When caught breaking the law, they claim ignorance of it. Wilson Allen tearing down opponents signs in the Primary supports, Julia Carson impropely dressed on the floor of Congress, no lease or building permits for Bill Mays and Lacy Johnson for the bar/restaurant arl Drummer, hanging out at illegal gambling joints Tony Duncan and Monroe Gray in city owned vehicles, conflicts of interest contracts using our tax dollars, and the list goes on. What a statement for black Democrats in power.

They are a public embarssment for African Americans.
Time for change on November 7th

Will we see Julia this week? We would like to know when and where. Please answer Wilson. You should know where we can find her at least once this week.

Anonymous said...

Well she has been invited to at least 2 community meet the candidates forums this week with plenty of advance notification.

Lets see if poor Megan draws the short straw again.

And she ( or who ever shows up if anyoen at all ) should be asked what group did get graced with Julia's attendence.

Advance Indiana:

M.E.D.I.C. Neighborhood Assn. is sponsoring a Meet the Candidates Forum and Debate for Friday, November 3rd, 6-9 PM at Crispus Attucks High School.

Neither Julia Carson or Carl Drummer has responded to be present.

Their opponents have agreed to a debate. Both seem to be taking Center Township voters for granted.

What influence does Robert Redford have in Indianapolis' 7th Congressional District? I heard him in a radio spot for Julia Carson.

Anonymous said...

Mr. Redford taped that commercial eight years ago.

To his credit, he read some of her positions, contacted her and offered to help her. He's allowed. He's an American.

How I wish Mr. Dickerson would come up off some moeny beyond the paltry radio ads I heard...those are already gone. And the one I heard was borderline misleading. No, come to think of it, it WAS misleading.

So there we have it. Two weeks out, and an incumbent limps to the finish line, hallucinating about little girls and running eight -yearold movie star ads.

And her challenger spent $16,000 on radio, which would buy, uh, about zero media points.

She's absolutely beatable and she's gonna sneak away with another one.

"How I wish Mr. Dickerson would come up off some moeny beyond the paltry radio ads I heard...those are already gone. And the one I heard was borderline misleading. No, come to think of it, it WAS misleading."

What was so paltry about those? The fact Mr. D isn't spewing mud and beating up on Julia? The fact he took aim at her tired old campaign slogans? What was so misleading about the ads? You must be confused with the Meliar Kennedy ads. Why should he spend billions on the race? Everyone knows who his face and name. Unless you've been under a rock or sleeping on a park bench you know that Eric Dickerson is running for Congress. If you think he's the football player - oh well he'll take your vote too.

Wilson46201 said...

Whatever happened to the $200,000 campaign E.D. promised? He raised only a third of that. Even $200K was ridiculously low for a serious Congressional bid.

It's still mighty peculiar that E.D. hasnt put much of his own money into his own campaign - assuming he has any liquid assets to spare. Why doesnt he mortgage his 5-acre "farm" up in Sheridan or is it already tapped to the max?

anonyrat said...

Hmmm never heard someone make a campaign promise to raise X amount of money. I've heard campaign promises for everything under the sun but never "F*** you people! All I want to do is raise a bajillion dollars for my campaign fund!"

What is wrong with that picture? And you should be delighted anyway since your congresswoman won't spend as much of her campaign fund so she can keep it when she is retired by the voters on November 7th.

Mmmmm ... D-Con!

Anonymous said...

The good people of Indianapolis know who Eric Dickerson is. We all know, he was at the dealership everyday, just like he is going to be working for the 7th, everyday.

It is so sad that someone can't grow up and want to be in elected office without being told you have to raise obscene amounts of money. So why isn't Julia spending? She has some money, is she saving it so she has something when she looses???

Wilson-mice, you must be a lonely little man. Your democratic friends never come out to play, and if they do, they don't identify themselves, so don't use a different set of rules for them and stop acting like such a superior human being, if you were so perfect you would quit lying.

Wilson46201 said...

I have no need to lie - E.D. does enough obfuscation for the both of us !

Anonymous said...

Wilson refuses to answer all questions. Are you afraid of incriminating yourself? He continues to babble about everybody' business accept his own.
No accountability which is typical of most Democrats.

indyernie said...

Hey Wilson after looking at the latest poll if Dickerson can get out the white R's he walks away with a win.

Under the ridiculous laws Congress has passed, leftover campaign funds can be converted to another federal campaign or kept for personal use.

I believe Julia will end this campaign with half a mil or so unspent. Win or lose, that's more money than she's seen in her entire life.

It'll buy a lot of wigs.

This is her last campaign.

Agreed. Because even Mike Tyson was eventually defeated.

She'll go down kicking and screaming and calling for recount after recount but she'll be retired two weeks from today.
