IMPD Officer Shot

The City's East Side has been a hot zone for shootings lately. A short while ago, an IMPD officer was shot by a suspect in the 800 block of Euclid Street. The officer has been rushed to Wishard Hospital. According to an online Star report, there is an additional shooting victim. No word on the downed officer's condition. According to WRTV, the police officer was serving a warrant when the suspect fled and a chase ensued. The officer was shot in the arm, and his injury is not thought to be life-threatening.

UPDATE: Regretfully, earlier reports indicating that Officer Jason Fishburn's injuries were not life-threatening proved inaccurate. The 29-year-old officer sustained a serious gunshot wound to the head and has had to undergo several hours of surgery tonight. The man who shot him is a suspect in the home invasion killing of a 69-year-old man on the City's Eastside earlier this week. He is also being treated for a gunshot wound to the shoulder inflicted on him as police apprehended him. Shortly after midnight, the Star's 911 site is active. There are two 911 calls reporting shots fired. One is on the City's near north side. The other is on the city's northeast side. Hopefully, those shootings are without victims.

UPDATE II: Officer Fishburn remains in critical condition after several hours of surgery. He is in a medically-induced coma this morning.

UPDATE III: Late this afternoon (Friday), doctors told reporters that Officer Fishburn's condition was guarded but acknowledged that most patients with similar injuries do not survive.

My thoughts are with the officer's family and friends as well as all of IMPD.

Gary - WISH-TV and WTHR-TV updated things - Ofcr. Fishburn was shot twice - once in the chest (deflected by kevlar vest) an once in the head.

This doesn't mesh with Chief Spears' statement that the officer suffered a "devastating" shot to the head.

Sadly, the officer was wounded badly in the head according to WNDY. Both Spears and Newman gave soundbites while Ballard stood by, mutely...

Gary, the officer was shot in the head, and is currently in critical condition. The POS who shot him was the one who received an arm wound

Sadly, Gary, you misread...

Indianapolis Police Chief Michael Spears called Officer Jason A. Fishburn a hero and asked the community to pray for him.

He said Fishburn suffered a "devastating'' gunshot wound to the head and remained in surgery about 9:30 p.m. Fishburn, a five-year veteran of the department, is married and comes from a law enforcement family, the chief said. His father is an Indianapolis police officer and his uncle is a retired U.S. Marshal, Spears said.

The perp is the one who was shot in the arm. Too bad it wasn't the other way around.

Count on a liberal to once again dance in blood and turn something tragic into something political. Sickening.

"Where is Mayor Ballard???"

I don't know wilson--but i think you answered your own question when said he was standing by "mutely"

although I could have sworn that i physically heard him giving a press conference last night...I thought mute was the absence of sound hmmmmmm....

by the way, you're a scumbag for making it political...

The suspect should have been summarily dispatched on the spot. And the crooks and scum will know that that's what awaits them if they keep up this crap.

Art said, "Where is Mayor Ballard???"

Are you kidding? Have you been watching the same news coverage as I've been watching since last night? I've seen Mayor Ballard in every report.

vox populi, I didn't misread. WRTV's report originally said Fishburn was shot in the arm. WRTV got it wrong.

AI, I didn't mean that as an attack. I guess I didn't see an earlier version of the story and really only saw on the news where they were pretty clear he was shot in the head.

Media getting things wrong... now there's a story. ;)

I don't really understand why anyone is making a political issue out of this.

Mayor Ballard is giving an update on WIBC as I type.

Put aside the politics.
Officer Fishburn and the city of Indianapolis need your prayers.

scratchman....you make many incorrect assumptions and draw faulty conclusions...starting with calling me Wilson........Your attitude is what makes life in Indy difficult.

Head wounds are so devastating and tragic, but recalling James Brady reminds me that it IS possible to recover from the extreme trauma a gunshot inflicts.

For Jason and all of IMPD, I hold onto that thought.
