Hate Crimes Bill Hearing This Thursday

UPDATED 2-7-07: The House Courts and Criminal Code Committee was originally scheduled to hear HB 1459 on Thursday, February 8 at 10:30 a.m. in Room 319 at the State House. The committee has pulled HB 1459 from its schedule of bills to be heard tomorrow. Prosecutor Brizzi's office believes it will be heard next week on February 14. Sponsored by Rep. Greg Porter (D-Indianapolis), the bill will provide enhanced sentencing penalties for persons who commit crimes against persons based on a bias, such as their religion, race or sexual orientation. Please contact members of the committee to urge their support of HB 1459.

The Committe on Courts and Criminal Code is chaired by Rep. Phil Hoy (D-Evansville). Other members of the committee include the following:

This could be a togh committee...with a one-vote Democratic margin, and good ole Vern Tincher in the majority.

Can someone get some common sense in that idiotic representative?

The posted committee schedule lists the bill for hearing on Thursday, February 8.

The schedule now says that HB1459 - Bias Crimes bill by Rep Porter ahs been withdrawn -- at least from the schedule for the 8th. What is one to make of that?
