Former New Orleans Mayor Receives 10-Year Prison Sentence

Former New Orleans Mayor Ray Nagin was sentenced by a federal judge today to ten years in prison for his conviction on multiple public corruption charges, including bribery, wire fraud, conspiracy, money laundering and tax evasion. The crime spree took place after federal and state dollars poured into the city that was forced to evacuate and shut down for a period of time following the devastating impact of Hurricane Katrina in 2005 in order to clean up and rebuild.

Federal prosecutors accused him of taking bribes of value, including personal parties, private jet rides, a family shopping spree to New York and lots of free granite for a kitchen countertop company he ran with his sons, totaling more than $500,000. Nagin testified at his trial and denied accepting any bribes.

I attended a convention in New Orleans a week before Hurricane Katrina struck at which Mayor Nagin spoke and welcomed us to his city. He made a very favorable first impression.

Schoolbus Nagin is an amateur compared to the big-leaguers here in Indy.

Why is nobody touching the Barnes and Thornburg boys at City Hall?

What does B&T have on everyone?

Another corrupt Democrat....

I wonder if he'll do work-release/parole on a "special" arrangement with our Center Township Trustee's office???

Didn't you read Matt Tully's column today, anon. 3:15? Indianapolis only has good, honest mayors; we've never had any corrupt mayors, the present occupant included. The corrupt pols up in Chicago dream of having a political columnist on their side instead of the likes of the Tribune's John Kass, who is actually capable of cutting through their phony facades. I'm betting that Tully has still never read Dick Cady's book, "Deadline: Indianapolis." How else could he still be living in Fantasyland?

Tully, if you're reading this, don't you want to be seen as a hero? Don't you want to be seen as the leading journalist of our time?

How would you feel to go through life as a Pulitzer winner?

How would you feel to have your name permanently etched into Indianapolis journalism history?

There's still time to change, but the clock doesn't run forever.

Hernan Dough, did you mean "Tully and Talley could get Nagin elected in Indy?"
