Michael Sam's Boyfriend Comes From Crime Family Tied To Illegal Sports Gambling
Amidst all the hoopla over Michael Sam becoming the first openly gay football player to be drafted by the NFL is news that the boyfriend he proudly kissed on live TV following news of his 7th round draft by the St. Louis Rams belongs to a family with notorious ties to organized crime. The 23-year old Vito Cammisano is the grandson of William "Willie the Rat" Cammisano, an infamous Kansas City organized crime leader. His grandfather, who passed away in 1995, served time in the 1980s for extortion and contempt of Congress. He had a long rap sheet for a variety of crimes, including theft, bootlegging and accusations of committing murder. His son, William, took over the reins of the crime syndicate after his father died but was arrested in 2010 for running a $3.5 million illegal sports betting operation. Vito's father, Jerry, served 14 months in prison for his role in the illegal sports betting operation and ordered to pay a $200,000 fine. Vito was a member of the University of Missouri's swim team before he graduated last year. He came out to his fellow swim team members in 2011. Cammisano now works as a promotions intern for Cumulus Broadcasting, which operates a large chain of radio stations around the country.
