State Dem Worker Gets Home Detention For Stealing

She stole $62,000 from the Indiana Democratic Party over a 2-year period for clothes, jewelry and out-of-state trips while employed there as a controller, but she won't spend a day in a jail for her crime. The Star's Jon Murray says Judge Reuben Hill sentenced Kim Bostic to six months of home detention, followed by 18 months of probation and 120 hours of community service. Bostic also agreed to repay the state party and its insurer $114,000 to cover the money she stole and the cost of auditing the state party's books and election reports.

Recall that Brad Hiller spent at least six months in a state prison after he pleaded guilty to stealing more than $100,000 from the Senate Republican Campaign Committee. Hiller, according to a Star report, vomited in the courtroom after being read his sentence. Bostic talked about the meaning of "Karma" during her sentencing hearing according to Murray.

I offer no excuses for his actions, but worked with Brad Hiller at the state party and fail to understand the discrepancy in the sentencing here...circumstances vary from case to case, but it seems that there should be some consistency in punishment for very similar crimes.

Isn't Reuben Hill a republican judge?????

I've heard of bi-partisan cooperation, but this is a crazy! Republican Judge Reuben Hill should have had her serve SOME time, even if it was only three months.

I suspect the difference in sentences may be based on the difference in dollars stolen- Brad Hiller stole nearly twice as much as did Kim Bostic. Plus, his name is almost spelled the same as Hitler, and that's bound to make a judge edgy.

Maybe it is all about expectations.

Perhaps Judge Hill doesn't believe that stealing from D's is as serious as stealing from R's, and thus does not warrant as serious a punishment.

Although I can think of a few more likely reasons:

(1) Hiller had a more responsible position - he was the executive director of the campaign committee and not an underling; or

(2) ISTR that Hiller was originally charged with both theft and filing a false report, both D felonies.

Oh, spare me the excuses. If someone would have stolen money at a store, they would have been serving time. Apparently white collar crime is okay with Reuben Hill. Really having seen what's going on in his court in other areas, it might be time for Hill to hang it up.
