The blog reports: "We should point out that as bad as the national exit polling looks, should things stay constant, both George Allen and Jim Talent will sail to re-election and Burns and Chafee would be in a dead heat. Also, the job approval ratings in the poll track the WashingtonPost/ABC poll that showed a momentum shift to the GOP. One thing is sure: it is going to be a long night."

Mike Pence (R-IN) is launching a leadership bid.

UPDATE-6:00 P.M.

Polls just closed in most of Indiana. ABC News paints a bleak picture of voter attitudes towards Bush in this election. Only 4 in 10 approve of the job he's doing according to their exit poll. Not good for Rs, but the exit polls totally got it wrong 2 years ago--calling the election for Kerry.

UPDATE-5:55 P.M.

What is on voter's minds today? CNN election-day polling says 62% of today's voters voted on national issues, while 33% voted on local issues. The top issues in this order: Corruption (42%), Terrorism (40%), Economy (39%) and Iraq (37%). Hotline Blog is reporting that the GOP is doing a better job with absentee votes this election year than Democrats, particularly in some key states. Indiana's data isn't tracked.

This will serve as the election thread to update you on tonight's election results. Polls will close in most of Indiana at 6:00 p.m., except for the northwestern and southwestern portions of the state located in the central time zone, where the polls will close an hour later. Also, polls in Delaware County will remain open until 8:40 p.m. because the MicroVote electronic machines were programmed incorrectly by the vendor, which prevented voters from voting when polls first opened this morning. Expect a lot of heat on MicroVote after the election. Recall that MicroVote, along with ES&S, operated nonconforming machines in this year's May primary, resulting in sanctions being imposed against both vendors. The Secretary of State's office reports no problems with either Indiana's new voter ID law or the state's new statewide voter registration database to which all counties are linked according to WTHR.

Early returns in Marion County should start rolling in shortly before 6:30 p.m. It's always hard to read too much into the early returns because you don't know for sure what part of the county vote is included in those numbers. Stay tuned for more updates.

A useful generality to remember: the further away from Monument Circle a precinct is, the sooner their results will be reported ... the early results tilt towards Republicans usually.
