Angel Rivera To Take Smith's Seat On Council

Marion County GOP committeepersons caucused last night and chose local businessman Angel Rivera after two ballots to fill the at-large council seat vacated by Kent Smith. The crowded race featured 11 candidates. The county GOP leadership had recommended Rivera. Rivera is being sworn in by Judge David Certo this afternoon at the City-County Council. He becomes the first Republican Hispanic to serve on the council. The first Hispanic member of the council was Karen Celestino-Horseman. Councilor Jose Evans' father was Cuban.

Democrat Karen Celestino Horseman was elected in 1999 by voters in a general election. It's good to see the GOP trying to catch up in their party caucus!

Catch up Wilson?
The GOP caucus is more diverse than the Dem's.
The Indianapolis democrats are the one playing catch up.
Nice try at spinning.

Michael, according to the National Georgraphic DNA geneaology project we are all African-American, as every living person can trace his or her ancestors back to Africa. Can't wait for that census form!

Actually Karen Celestino-Horseman also claimed to be of Indian heritage.

How are Latino women supposed to look? Is there a guide or a rubric somewhere?

indyernie, I think you would have a very difficult time proving that the GOP council caucus is more diverse than the Dems. The Dems have had the diversity there for several years. Would you care to elaborate on the council GOP diversity?

The Mexican population is descended from indigenous people- the Indians. So technically, Indian is also correct.
I suppose, next time Karen has her promo head shot done she should wear her giant sombrero that we are all issued at birth so people know she is Mexican.

Paul:

I think you might be the first Republican who admits that the original man is African. Now how about we teach that in schools and in churches?

Looking Hispanic?

When I was in college, everyone thought I was Venezuelan...because of my blonde hair.

Mestizo does mean mixed heritage, after all. We're not all Amerindian!
