U.S. Rep. Steve Buyer (R-IN) will announce shortly that he will not seek re-election to Congress this year the Indianapolis Star confirms. Buyer's official announcement will be made at IU Hospital in Indianapolis at 11:00 a.m. "Family concerns" prompted his decision. It is not clear if there is a health-related reason for today's announcement given the location of the announcement. Buyer has represented the 4th District since 1992. He has recently come under attack and has faced an ethics complaint over a nonprofit scholarship fund he established, which failed to award any scholarships despite raising considerable funds. His decision will likely set off a mad scramble among Republicans in his district to replace him. Several state lawmakers may jump into the race.
UPDATE: Buyer's wife has been diagnosed with a serious, unidentified auto-immune disorder for which she has been receiving treatment. That's the reason he has offered for his retirement.
I feel so bad for Mrs. Buyer, and, of course, for him. When Steve first ran eighteen years ago, he advocated that he was for term limits, and promised that he would not serve for more than three terms, which as we know means a total of six years.

I also feel sorry for the illness of Mrs. Buyer. Nonetheless, her husband is a hypocrite.
