Council Members Drop 32% Pay Raise For Mayor, Pursue 40% Raise For Themselves

The lame duck Indianapolis City-County Council will drop its last-minute maneuver to boost incoming Mayor Joe Hogsett's salary 32% from $95,000 a year to $125,000 according to the proposal's sponsor, Mary Moriarty-Adams, who did not seek re-election this year. The plan to boost City-County Council members' pay nearly 40% to a base salary of $16,400 beginning January 1 remains on tap. Most council members will earn more than $20,000 a year for their part-time service on the council when per diem income is included if the pay raise takes effect. Adams told reporters that both Hogsett and outgoing Mayor Ballard expressed skepticism over the proposed mayoral pay raise.

These Councilors are despicable. Mary Moses Moriarty, my former Councilor, is well known for behind the scenes plays for favored special interests. I pray the Mary and her hubby will take the wealth they've created all these decades at the teat of government and go, just go. Digital sign boards, ROC... as long as there is money, er... campaign donations, in it, the insider schemes will be a "go".

The Marion County GOP's boy Fake Republican Greg Ballard proved to all of Marion County forevermore that the City of Indianapolis has NO NEED for a City County Council. End of story.

What we SHOULD be talking about, instead of raising salaries for the career political class whose privilege, power, and payola trumps the needs of the people, is that INDIANAPOLIS TAXPAYERS SHOULD BE ABLE TO VOTE TO DISBAND THE CITY COUNTY COUNCIL.

Not a one of them deserves what they are now paid, imho. Vision Fleet or Blue Indy, anyone?

Abolishing of per diem should be an easy move. One just asks what the heck it is for? They are already getting a decent salary for a part time job and full time benefits for a very part time job....plus anything they can steal. These discussions resonate with the public. Might give them the choice of a salary or the per diem but pertaining not both.

I am waiting for someone to create a Facebook page "Disband The Indianapolis City County Council NOW". It seems the idea is gathering steam. From what I've heard from some voters on the streets regarding this political gaggle of CCC goofballs, the voters seem to like the idea.

While disbanding the CCC sounds appealing, I worry that removing the only - albeit weak - fetter to mayoral freewheeling might be not so desirable.

Proved for all with eyes open to see, and by none other than Republican Mayor Greg Ballard, the apparent sole existence of The Indianapolis City County Council is to give the Marion County voting taxpayers the illusion they have any effective voice in how their confiscated income [tax money] is spent and how their collective will is pursued and implemented.

Democrat Maggie Smith's Council has intentions of raising its pay regardless of the public repugnance [for Maggie Smith: that means "intense disgust"] and outcry against such self-interest and total lack of honest about the issue during campaigning.

None of this occurs under any Indianapolis Mayor. Let's be honest about it. There is no fetter on lawless mayors who are in effect habitual criminals and pathological liars.

  7. They should be proud to be able to serve the public as legislators, in a part-time capacity, and only accept a nominal offering from us taxpayers. Shame on all of the who vote themselves a raise.
