James Hinchcliffe Crashes During Practice Today
James Hinchcliffe had to undergo surgery to repair a thigh injury he sustained from a bad crash in Turn 3 during a practice session at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway in preparation for this weekend's Indy 500 race. Unlike three earlier crashes involving Chevrolet cars, Hinchcliffe was driving a Honda. His car briefly flipped over before rolling back in an upright position. He also becomes the first driver to suffer an injury during a crash this year. Hinchcliffe qualified in the 24th position. His team's owner, Schmidt Peterson Motorsports, will be allowed to substitute a driver to take his place in Sunday's race.
This looks like a rear suspension piece or the right hand halfshaft broke as you could tell the sparks on the right rear. The car took an immediate hard right turn into the wall. Those are much scarier than the three fips by Helio, Newgarden, and Carpenter so far this month.
