State Senate Candidate Says Business Owners Who Don't Accept Same-Sex Marriages Should Be Denied Police And Fire Protection Services
This video uploaded to YouTube from a recent candidates forum sponsored by the Jewish Community Relations Council of Greater Indianapolis has a response J.D. Ford, a Democratic candidate in District 29 seeking to unseat incumbent Sen. Mike Delph (R), an opponent of same-sex marriages, gave to a question about businesses which have an issue accepting a recent federal court decision holding that Indiana's Defense of Marriage Law was unconstitutional. The exact wording of the question is unclear since the video clip only includes the response of Ford, an openly gay candidate, to the question. "I think that, if that's the case, then those businesses need to hire their own private security," Ford said. "I think those businesses need to have a pale for water to put out their own fire," he continued. "And so those are public resources that we provide to those businesses." It raises the question of whether Ford is taking his views on same-sex marriage to an extreme that people on his side of the issue often accuse those on Delph's side of the issue of taking. What do you think?
UPDATE: If a conservative Republican candidate had made a comment as troubling as Ford's comments, (think of Richard Mourdock and what God intended comment on pregnancy resulting from rape), does anyone believe it would have long gone viral after being blasted by every major news organization in this state, as well as around the nation?
I'd be thrilled to have the option to opt-out of public police and fire protection. I would expect to get my money back for all the property taxes my business pays but I doubt that was part of Mr. Ford's proposal.
ReplyDeleteFurther, I think a lot of businesses would opt-out (if they get their $ back). Fairly quickly you would see an increase in privately-provided security and fire protection companies. Wow! Mr. Ford may have hit on a terrific economic development idea. Finally, a good unintended consequence.
"I think that, if that's the case, then those businesses need to hire their own private security,"
ReplyDeleteAwesome! I'll buy my own police and fire services, and I won't ever have to cooperate with the police or abide by a single fire code regulation.
I'll be exempt from any tax that could possibly fund police or fire.
Awesome!
This is exactly the monopoly libertarians have been trying to get out from under, for decades.
Thanks, J.D.
So now it's the "it's all about love" pro-marriage groups who want those who have moral and philosophical disagreements with them to burn in hell. Two nut jobs don't equal one bright legislative candidate.
ReplyDeleteOnce again, if marriage is "all about love," how is a brother and sister marriage logically disallowed under All About Love?
ReplyDeleteWe do not know the the question Ford was asked. We have all this rubbish about strongly held Religious Beliefs, trumping secular law. Is there a Test for this - multiple choice, true false, etc.?
ReplyDeleteThomas Paine's statement in "The Age of Reason"-
"I believe in one God, and no more; and I hope for happiness beyond this life.
I do not believe in the creed professed by the Jewish church, by the Roman church, by the Greek church, by the Turkish church, by the Protestant church, nor by any church that I know of. My own mind is my own church.
All national institutions of churches, whether Jewish, Christian or Turkish, appear to me no other than human inventions, set up to terrify and enslave mankind, and monopolize power and profit."
It is good to see that J.D. has outed himself as a closeted supporter of the great Murray Rothbard's Anarcho-capitalism. For consistency's sake, J.D. will need to advocate getting the government out of the marriage business as well.
ReplyDeleteThe more I think about this, the more pissed I get. The utter callousness and sickness of this statement is both frightening and enlightening. His is the moral equivalent of ISIS, accepting that anyone who does not think the way he does can die a fiery death, or be raped and murdered in their own home, with no protection and no response permitted by the government sworn to protect and serve. Why not just go ahead and crucify them, J.D.? A pale of water to put out my own fire? Go to hell, sir.
ReplyDeleteKarma09, the police do not have a duty to serve and protect you. See Castle Rock v. Gonzales.
ReplyDeleteThey are just the revenue collection agents and enforcers of the state.
If you don't know the question to which the answer was given then you have nothing by which to put the answer in context. At the end of his statement, Mr. Ford says, "I would not be in support of that." Clearly, someone has asked him if he would support something and he said no. Maybe Delph is one of those crazy legislators intending to legalize discrimination by offering ridiculous legislation that says if if offends you, then you do not have to serve gay people, black people or brown people and Mr. Ford was responding to the question of whether he would support such legislation.
