Nytes Doesn't Seek Re-Election To Council Because Her Candidacy Is Prohibited By The Little Hatch Act

While the Indianapolis Star praises City-County Councilor Jackie Nytes for her years of service on the council in noting her planned departure at the end of this term, there is an explanation for her decision not to seek re-election. She could not legally run for re-election as long as she held her job as executive director of the Mapleton-Fall Creek Community Development Corporation. Her CDC is funded with millions of dollars in federal HUD grant money the Ballard administration has given to it in consideration for those "bipartisan" votes she cast for the Ballard administration that so angered her Democratic colleagues, not to mention the nice contracts her husband's printing business got from the Ballard administration. Nytes' own signature appeared on the contracts that governed the use of those HUD grant dollars. That means she is ineligible to seek a partisan office under the Little Hatch Act. There was no way of getting around the Little Hatch Act short of quitting her job at the CDC. That's the real explanation for her decision not to seek re-election which you won't read about in the Indianapolis Star.
