Pence A Favorite Of Social Conservatives
While the news media in Indiana is yucking it up about a possible run for president by Gov. Mitch Daniels, Indiana's U.S. Rep. Mike Pence is demonstrating unusual strength for someone who is supposedly not running for president. Pence topped a straw poll of Republican presidential contenders in 2012 at the Family Research Council's Voters Summit in Washington today. Pence placed first with 24% of the vote, followed by former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee, who placed second with 22%. Former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney came in third with 13%, while Newt Gingrich picked up the support of 10% to take fourth place. Former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin surprisingly drew just 7% of the vote. Mississippi Gov. Haley Barbour captured only 1% of the vote. Former Minnesota Gov. Tim Pawlenty and Daniels did not participate in the straw vote. Pence reportedly drew the most favorable reaction from the crowd when he spoke Friday night among other candidates, including Huckabee, Gingrich and Romney.
Pence is in an interesting position. He's been in the House long enough to build up some seniority and he could make a career, and build up a lot of power staying there. Or he could take that high profile and run for governor, or possibly build up some executive experience in a VP or other high level position inside a POTUS administration.
ReplyDeleteHe's certainly someone to keep an eye on.
I think he would be smart to run for governor. I haven't heard anyone sound real excited about Skillman as a candidate. Every time I hear her speak she reminds me of a first-grade teacher talking to her students.
ReplyDeleteKind of hoping Richard Mourdock would consider running for Governor. I've never heard Skillman really talk about personal liberty, economic freedom and other things that I consider important. Doesn't mean she hasn't, I just know I've not heard it.
ReplyDeleteCongressman Pence and the Family Research Council deserve each other.
ReplyDeleteWhomever the Republicans run will get their ass handed to them by Evan Bayh.
ReplyDeleteI don't agree, Vox. I think Bayh's pandering (and I say pandering because I don't honestly know where the man stands on many issues) during his bids for a VP slot may have alienated some in the center-right who voted for him.
ReplyDeleteYeah, Indy Student, he might only win 57% of the vote instead of 67%.
ReplyDeleteGive Skillman a chance I heard she just earn her Associate Degree (don't know if she earned it through going to classes or life experience) to add more gravitas to her resume for a run for governor.
ReplyDeleteI agree Marycatherine. The FRC loves to give support to these big government neocons (they never name a program they will cut) but gain their love of Jesus by giving lip service against abortion and gay marriage and being in favor of bombing 3rd world nations into the stoneage. Yes sir that is what Jesus would do bomb the hell out of those Muslim SOB's.
