Scott Newman Leaving Ballard Administration
Public Safety Director Scott Newman is departing the Ballard administration less than half way through the Mayor's first term. Newman focused on reorganizing the police department after control of IMPD was transferred from Sheriff Frank Anderson's office to Mayor Ballard. A police scandal involving more than 50 police officers who were employed off duty by a scrap metal dealer blemished his record. His office has come under criticism recently by the Star for failing to implement policy changes to avoid conflict of interest issues associated with police officers off-duty work. A successor to Newman has not been chosen. Newman has suffered from Parkinson's disease for several years.
Newman thought he was the Indianapolis Police Chief. Now that he's leaving, perhaps the make-work, do-nothing position of "Public Safety Director" can be eliminated.
