Varvel's Bartman

Star editorial cartoonist Gary Varvel's talents aren't limited to still cartoons. His animated creation of the Bartman is one which will resonate with many of you. The guy really sums up this year's mayoral race. I suspect there are political consultants who would pay Varvel a lot more than he's making working for Gannett for the kind of talent he has.

His work isn't that good. Are you so wrapped up in seeing Peterson defeated that you're willing to look past Varvel's past comments equating people like you to deviants?

  2. In a word, 'Yes'.

    Any more questions, Wilson?

  3. Gary is a good honest family man.
Honestly how many of us agree a 100% with anyone.
Gary would be the first to defend your rights even if he didn't agree with your ideas or action.
What more do you want from a person?

Are you so wrapped up in Peterson's re-election that you are willing to look past Bart's shortcomings?
Are you deft and blind to his total lack of concern for public safety?
Are you missing the fact that he increased the size of city government and at the same time he reduced services?

Wake up brother, the zombie is knocking at your door. He’ll eat your brains if you let him.

I've read Varvel's stuff for years.

Poster No. 1 at 8:02 comes closest to summing up Varvel. One of my better collegiate friends is a cartoonist, started withi Dayton newspaper, now syndicated internationally. In that community, Varvel is not respected.
If he were, he likely wouldn't still be in Ind,y and even if he were still her, he'd have more of his work syndicated. It's not.

One word sums up most of his cartoons: mean. Another word? Narrow-minded.

But I have to admit the Bartman is kinda funny.

No, I would love to see Greg Ballard elected. I don't think it will happen, but we would all be better off if it did. My problem is that Varvel is a very fundamentalist Christian that subscribes to the Eric Miller school of thought with respect to gays.

I agree - Varvel would not be my choice of poster boy for progressive issues - of which gay rights is one of the biggest.

It's not just the gay issue---Varvel's cartoons, over the years, have been pretty intolerant of anything except far-right principles.

That's his right, and it's The Star's right to publish them. It is a rather narrow view, though.

Which oughta get him picked up by some newspaper syndicate, but it hasn't.

That market is pretty smart. They've evidently figured out that editorial cartoons are supposed to make you think, and maybe chuckle. Not wince.
