I've long advocated a revolving door law to prevent state lawmakers from taking employment immediately upon their resignation from office that pose concerns the lawmaker may have traded on legislative favors to win employment outside the legislature. Our constitution prohibits a person from serving in the executive and legislative branch at the same time. Lubbers is getting her cake and eating it too. She's getting a vote and the opportunity to influence her own budget. Who knows what she's done over the past year in her legislative job to help line up her new government job.Gary R. But in this one I think you're off base.

The voters elected Sen. Lubbers to represent them in the Senate, including the passage of a budget. I think it was great to see her delay taking the new job long enough to finish the job she committed to on behalf of the voters.

My guess is that this is really just another attack at Tom Johns who seems to have ticked off the Central Indiana blogging community and basically anything he does is considered negatively.daltonsbriefshttps://www.blogger.com/profile/10848952073180198356noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-12703782.post-75415350769399958462009-06-26T07:46:52.035-05:002009-06-26T07:46:52.035-05:00Of course, is it possible to have a citizen legisl...Of course, is it possible to have a citizen legislature and NOT have conflicts of interest? Every budget allocates education funding, so every teacher in the General Assembly could INDIRECTLY benefit. Every corporate tax reduction could INDIRECTLY (or even directly) benefit all the business owners or officers.

How can you ever have a truly conflict-free legislature unless you make the membership permanent?Chris Wordenhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/00558836541249077077noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-12703782.post-52761391825666980292009-06-26T07:40:04.784-05:002009-06-26T07:40:04.784-05:00For folks looking for good government without conf...For folks looking for good government without conflict, these are, indeed, some troubling revelations.Chris Wordenhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/00558836541249077077noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-12703782.post-42461393858861607442009-06-25T13:23:07.582-05:002009-06-25T13:23:07.582-05:00Well, she hasn't actually started the other jo...Well, she hasn't actually started the other job yet.

By the way, when I said "Hamilton County resident and Marion County Center Area Chairman" ...I left out "David Brooks."Paul K. I don't know how you can separate those two conflicting roles under these circumstances.Gary R. When it comes to education issues in Indiana, Lubbers has been positively brilliant, deserving an A+++++ in my book. On other issues, we'll there have been some concerns. She did vote to raise taxes for the CIB bailout for example.

Not sure about the conflict of voting in the Senate while she has the other job lined up. Possibly there is a conflict in some of the votes, but the trouble is many of those issues affecting higher education is lumped into the general budget bill. I'm not terribly offended with Lubbers finishing out the special session before going to the new job.

The one area that most concerns me is that this period of time is being used by Chairman Tom John and Hamilton County resident and Marion County Center Area Chairman to fill PC vacancies with mummy dummies to vote for their hand-picked candidate, Barnes & Thornburg attorney Ryan Vaughn.

I doubt Lubbers delayed her departure for that purpose. But it is an unfortunate byproduct of her delay.Paul K. The whole thing is troubling on several fronts: Voting upon matters upon which you will preside, perhaps profit from, is another glaring example of how State & Local backscratching is part of the Theatre of the Unethically Absurd. These unrepresenting representatives come first with the taxpayers last.
It comes as no surprise that the roving media trolls that slither from soundbite to soundbite in the statehouse and city council never look behind the curtain, as that would jeopardize their continued access. When you have the CIB operating in the red for 10 years without a whimper from these media goofs is proof enough that serious investigative reporting has been replaced by cosmetic blather. We are paying 50% more for a daily newspaper that is dime thin and the obituaries take up half of the metro section, and the rest is nearly tabloid.
Advance Indiana continues to provide a valuable service. Keep up the good work.Patriot Paulhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/03986604576219564749noreply@blogger.com
