Those buildings would be torn down regardless of the Wishard project as the asbestos and lead are significant health hazards.

Then why now, after 10+ years of being vacant, are they just now tearing them down? Neither building has any signs of structural failure, so a partial or full collapse is not eminent. The fact is, those over control of the buildings didn't want to spend one dime toward demolition unless the land was going to be used for something in the near future.

As far as a new Wishard is concerned, it doesn't phase me one way or another. I do understand why some question the path that it is taking to build the hospital. I can also understand the need, as the current site is a bunch of buildings built over many years. Of course we could just shut Wishard down, then all that money that flows into the businesses at 10th and Indiana Ave. can just go elsewhere, maybe even out of Marion County?Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-12703782.post-72838605624679589942009-08-05T10:06:10.015-05:002009-08-05T10:06:10.015-05:00The old 'It's pennies on the dollar for mo...The old 'It's pennies on the dollar for most homeowners' argument. One project after another comes along and that's universally the rationale given. Those pennies add up.

Those '100,000' patients could be spread around 10 other area hospitals and they would each see only 30 more patients per day.

And it's ironic the argument that we have built a stadium is being used to justify paying for a new Wishard, as the stadium was hugely unpopular but was still rammed down our throats AND is little more than a tool for directing millions/billions to a few well-off key players.

Maybe all that other baggage follows for Wishard, too.Downtown Indyhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/06239811599722585898noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-12703782.post-59147843028103703002009-08-05T08:57:09.592-05:002009-08-05T08:57:09.592-05:00The fact is we have built many new hospitals in th...The fact is we have built many new hospitals in this county. Tax-exempt hospitals thrive because of they don't pay taxes but are otherwise operated like private businesses. The problem with our health care system is not that we don't spend enough money on it. Quite to the contrary, we spend too much money on frivolous things like constantly building new hospitals and other ancillary buildings to provide health care. I'm happy, ifdpolitics, that you finally owned up to the fact that you have a vested interest in Wishard.Gary R. Fine. Then let's have a fair vote at a real election with a balanced and fair question. The fact is when HHC pulls dishonest stunts like they have on this referendum it's hard to take HHC's word regarding the project.Paul K. My wife also works at Wishard and my family receives our care there through private insurance. That work for you? The idea that Wishard only provides care to the indigent is shortsighted and long rooted. The majority of the staff physicians are board certified, many are on staff at the IU School of Medicine and the patient volume alone provides an excellent teaching and clinical environment for future physicians, nurses, paramedics, and others in the health care field. So often we have battled the stigma of Wishard being the "poor" hospital. If we can build a stupid stadium, we can build a new Wishard. It's pennies on the dollar for most homeowners and well worth it to support. I'd love to have coffee with you sometime and let you see the tangible, non-political side of this.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-12703782.post-9339141529557677262009-08-05T08:33:52.459-05:002009-08-05T08:33:52.459-05:00If you know so much about this ifdpolitics, why ar...If you know so much about this ifdpolitics, why are you afraid to identify yourself to the readers here?Gary R. Second, I hope none of you who are quick to bash Wishard ever need its services or lose your health coverage. This is NOT some vast political conspiracy, this is about a 100 year old building that cannot sustain modern medicine and continue to treat over 100,000 people a year in its ER and just as many or more in its clinics and speciality offices. If you want your 10 minute wait at St V's or Community North to be 4 hours, then vote NO. Its not like the existing hospitals have the extra resources or space to treat all those who currently go to Wishard. I know the despise of Bob Grand and his type is justified, just don't take it out on the patients and 4200 employees at Wishard. They deserve better.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-12703782.post-7839577257439865502009-08-05T05:15:35.523-05:002009-08-05T05:15:35.523-05:00The project has already started. Mich. St., they are working in broad daylight. A few months ago, crews were in the old LaRue Carter getting rid of the remaining asbestos. Both buildings are scheduled for demolition in the coming months. LaRue is supposed to be torn down starting in Sept.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.com
